Teen Social Group

This group will consist of structured activities and semi-structured free time to help self-advocates age 12-18 build relationships with friends, spend time in their community, and practice a variety of skills.
Virtual Social Group for Teens

These Virtual Social Groups for Teens provide a structured, creative, and dynamic environment for participants to socialize, learn, and have fun together, without the hassle of leaving the house or arranging transportation. Lauren Holmes, the facilitator of the group, who is our Virtual Life Skills Specialist, ensures every individual is included in meaningful ways during the group activities. This is also an awesome opportunity to build meaningful relationships with new friends who are both local and from other states in our country.
All registered participants will receive a Zoom link from the instructor.
Adult Social Group
with Jessica Fahey
Adults are invited to attend our in-person social groups on Tuesday evenings from 6:00-8:00 PM. Sessions are always a balance of continuing education and having a good time with friends. We’d love to see you there!
Young Athletes

Ages: 4 - 7
In partnership with Special Olympics, Young Athletes is designed to promote the development of an active lifestyle through play for children between the ages of 4 and 7. Self-advocates will engage in a variety of activities and games alongside their peers targeted towards gross motor and social skill development. The first and final sessions are required.
There are two different series of Young Athletes during the Spring Service Season. Please only register for one. Once all spots are filled in both of the offerings, a waiting list will be created and families will be informed of future opportunities.
There are limited spots available in order for every child to receive sufficient support and instruction, and there will be a maximum of 6 children per class this season. Spots will be filled on a first come, first served basis, and based on commitment to the scheduled times and meeting of age and documentation criteria.

Preschool Rhythm & Play at DSI

Preschool Rhythm & Play
Dates: Jan 30th, March 27th, April 10th
Time:9:30–10:45 AM
A lively blend of music, movement, and sensory exploration for ages 3–5
Preschool Rhythm & Play invites young children to move, groove, and explore, alongside their parents, in a fun, developmentally supportive environment. Each session begins with upbeat music and simple dance movements that build coordination, balance, and body awareness. Children will sing, stretch, and move their bodies creatively as they follow along with guided rhythm activities.
Midway through class, children transition into sensory play breakout sessions led by an Occupational Therapist and OT Students. These hands-on experiences allow kids to explore textures, materials, and tools that support fine motor development, sensory regulation, and confidence through play.
Designed for all abilities, this class encourages social connection, creativity, and joyful movement—helping preschoolers build important skills while having a blast.

Jackson County Social Group- Teens & Young Adults

This group will consist of community-based activities in the Lee's Summit area to help self-advocates and their families in eastern Jackson County build relationships with friends and become more involved in their community. Register to receive monthly communication regarding that month's activity on each of the dates below, as our community activities are collaborative and planned with support with the parents of several self-advocates.

A lively blend of music, movement, and sensory exploration for ages 0–5
($5 per child, and siblings are welcome)
This is a combo class of Music & Motion and our Rhythm & Play coming together. This class invites young children to move, groove, and explore in a fun, developmentally supportive environment. We will have a private room to start our class for our introductions, music, and rhythm.
Midway through class, children transition into sensory play breakout and explore the equipment at the play cafe.
Designed for all abilities, this class encourages social connection, creativity, and joyful movement—helping preschoolers build important skills while having a blast.
